Bondi Surf Bathers’ SLSC Chaplain leads discussion on mental health, leadership & building community

Ps Marty Nevzal took on the role of Chaplain with Bondi SLSC in March of 2017 and had a great first season, offering Pastoral care for its members.  Following some very rewarding, one on one discussions with some club members, Marty suggested to club management that they should try some proactive initiatives to promote health and wellbeing.

After seeing the benefit these sorts of talks could have in removing the stigma connected to mental health issues, Bondi officials gave the go ahead for Marty to arrange 5 sessions using recognised local presenters.

These events are inclusive and open to all, the general public included. Like other clubs, the Bondi bar opens on a Sunday afternoon, providing an ideal location to conduct the presentations.

One of the first presenters was Martha Tevita, Australias’ Strongest woman. Martha also speaks at schools, letting teens know they don’t have to look like those celebrities they see on TV or in magazines. She also talks about the effects of bullying, and the negativity and lifetime scars caused by bullying. Martha also encourages people to follow their dreams through to completion!
Pastor Ian Zerna, from Impact Church, was able to bring a professional and entertaining message to the 2ndevent.

Three more events are planned for the beginning of next year to finish out the season.
