Life Saving Chaplaincy Australia celebrates 21 years of service to the community.

At the 2019 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, to be held at Broadbeach SLSC, Gold Coast in April this year, Life Saving Chaplaincy will be celebrating 21 years of service to the Life Saving community.

Ecumenical Service at the 2011 Surf Life Saving Championships, Kurrawa, Gold Coast QLD.L-R Terry Legg – LSCA Founder & Southport SLSC Chaplain, Mark Fife OAM – LSCA Ambassador and SLSQ President, Dony Johnson – Kawana Waters SLSC & Sunshine Coast Branch Chaplain and Ann Donnelly-Marshall – Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC member.

It was at this same event back in 1998 that the then SLSA President, Alan Whelpton, AO, endorsed LSCA to be the official provider of Chaplains to Life Saving Clubs in Australia. Terry Legg started this movement by becoming the first LSCA Chaplain at his own club Southport SLSC, Main Beach, Gold Coast. Since then our Chaplains are now serving in more than 60 clubs around Australia, as well as in Royal Life Saving Society Australia clubs and more recently we now have Chaplains serving Life Saving communities internationally.

We have many clubs requesting a Chaplain and we are constantly looking for the right men and women to fill these roles. Admittedly most of the work is done on the weekend when the lifesavers are on the beach watching and protecting their club mates and visitors and that can pose a problem. But the reality is, Life Savers do not only use their skills on the beach. The training lifesavers receive also allows them to use their skills in community situations so our Chaplains are also there for the members on and off the beach.

Chaplains at the 2016 Surf Life Saving Championships Maroochydore. QLD. Russ Harmond LSCA National Ministry Coordinator, Chaplain Nobbys SLSC, QLD. Thomas Schmid  Chaplain Wanda SLSC, NSW. Rich Wenden Chaplain Cronulla SLSC, NSW. Gary Olive Chaplain Maroochydore SLSC, QLD, Bandy Edwards Chaplain SLSSA, Terry Legg – LSCA Founder & Southport SLSC Chaplain.

On the 7th April 2019 at 6.45am we will have our regular Ecumenical Beach Service at Broadbeach SLSC. If you’re in the vicinity please come and join us. It will be the 26th year where we been have involved in the service. To our knowledge, the SLSA championships and the International Life Saving Federation World Championships are the only sporting events where time is dedicated to a beach service.

We look forward to having a time of celebration and tossing around memories from the last 21 years.
